Senator Jacky Rosen Supports Las Vegas Airport’s Renaming

Senator Jacky Rosen from Nevada has conveyed her backing for the Clark County Commission’s discussion about renaming McCarran International Airport. The matter is considered due to the anti-Semitic and racist deeds of late state Senator Pat McCarran, whom the airport is named after.

Rosen termed the international airport in Southern Nevada a significant travel and tourism hub, which brings individuals from many parts of the world to the state. She finds it unfortunate that its present name is from a person who left an anti-Semitic, xenophobic, and bigotry-related legacy.

Over the last few years, there has been some focus on McCarran’s legacy in the Nevada state. McCarran played a part in curbing the Jewish refugee count to the US following the Second World War, plus he made prejudiced remarks against the Jews.
He was the so-called McCarran Internal Security Act’s principal sponsor, too. The act made registering with the US federal government necessary for Communist organizations, plus it was a fundamental part of the 1950’s Second Red Scare.
Rosen said that fighting back against all kinds of hatred and anti-Semitism is her mission. Therefore, she is happy to know that the Commission would think about a measure to have another name for the airport that better typifies the state’s values.
The government organization will decide whether to name the property after Harry Reid, the former senator from Nevada, by vote. Reid served in Washington as the Majority Leader of the United States Senate for nine years between 2007 and 2015.

The Commission member Tick Segerblom proposed the measure, which serves as the latest bid to have this airport named after Reid. The commissioner tried to have a bill passed to that end as a Nevada senator in 2017 but to no avail.
Clark County Commission’s members Justin Jones and William McCurdy, too, supported the airport’s renaming in its first conversion this month.

Rosen finds Reid’s name an excellent choice for the said airport. As for Rosen, Reid has committed his own life to help Nevada reach new heights, as well as become a world-famous travel and tourism destination.

Rosen has backed the renaming of the airport before this as well. In a June 2020 letter with all the Democrats of the state delegation’s signatures, the legislators approved local attempts to rename it. They also backed the plan of removing the McCarran statue from Washington’s National Statuary Hall Collection.
